THE BASICS

"Steamboat Willie" (Ion Sku 900178VE) takes the classic1929 Disney cartoon and re-imagines it as a live stage production for the 21st century. Composer Harrison Collins provides has created fresh new score for either wind ensemble or orchestra. The Loft Creative Studio remastered the film and the audio sound effects.  An optional live Foley artist solo part can be added to your production. The film and the score and parts are available through Ion Concert Media.

The film is available 1920x1080 format.  The electronic audio fx are divided into seven different tracks that are embedded in the .ion Show File.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Sync Solution.  Muséik is the exclusive synchronizing technology. Muséik allows the digital media to follow live tempo in real time. Please see other Knowledge Base articles to learn more about the technology. If you have not used Muséik in the past, please allow 6-8 weeks minimum for technical planning. You will not need all of this time, but it is much better to stay ahead of schedule than to be forced to rush things the week of your concert. Files will only play on Mac computers; the show cannot be run with Windows machines.

Video. The presenting organization is responsible for arranging projectors and display surfaces. Please consult with your local AV rental service to determine proper sizes for screens and projectors.  If you are using a live Foley artist he or she will require a stage monitor with a live video feed matching the projected image (no audio is required). A typical setup will include the Muséik software running on a laptop with two extended displays (the projection screen and the Foley monitor) both outputting the main video feed. Most modern Mac computers can deliver the two video feeds natively; do a web search for how to set it up for your specific hardware. As an alternative an external docking station or video splitter can be used.

Audio. The .ion Show File ships with seven audio tracks. All the sound fx required in the film are split across these seven tracks, with Track 1 being the easiest and most basic fx and Track 7 being all the character voices. Specifically, the tracks are organized as follows:

  • Track 1: Basic Effects
  • Track 2: The Cat
  • Track 3: The Duck
  • Track 4: Mechanics and Footsteps
  • Track 5: Water Effects
  • Track 6: Chewing and Splats
  • Track 7: Character Voices

Each of these tracks can be mixed and muted, making it possible to design your audio production to fit your needs.

NOTE:  The voices of Mickey, Minnie and the Parrot have all been restored from the original 1929 production and retained in this new version. We felt very strongly about this decision since all of the voice acting for Steamboat Willie was recorded by Walt Disney himself. Sadly, the part of Pete The Bear was not salvageable and we used modern sound library elements for his parts.

Foley Artist. This production has been designed to allow for an optional live Foley artist solo part to deliver some, most, or all of the audio fx live from stage. The Foley part is not notated or written down in any format.  Instead, each producing ensemble is invited to apply their own creativity to the part. Using the audio tracks in the Show File, your Foley production can be small and manageable ( mute just Track 1 and let the software deliver all the other audio fx), or a full stage production (mute all seven tracks and add a voice actor role).

Developing your own Foley part, collecting the required materials and rehearsing the part will take time.  Ensembles should allow 2-3 weeks of prep time for a very limited Foley performance and 4-6 weeks for a larger production.

Here are several links to videos and documents that can be helpful as you prepare the Foley artist part:

An introductory video by Victor Zupanc at the Children's Theater in Minneapolis. Victor is a great guy and his video, while maybe aimed at younger viewers, does a great job of showing how easy Foley art can be.
